brother printer

Brother Printer is the subsidiary of the Japanese electronics company Brother Industries, Ltd., and it has been in the market for over 113 years. Started in 1908 with headquarters in Nagoya, Japan, Brother Industries started as a small workshop that provided parts for sewing machines. For the next 100 years, it grew into a multi-billion dollar company with 38,624 employees in over 40 countries. It’s inspiring to see how a single company that started manufacturing sewing machines became one of the top organizations that rule the printer manufacturing sector. Let’s see how Brother got here and what contributed to its glorious success.

A brief history about Brother

There are several reasons why Brother Printer is the best printer company globally, and its success drives back to its root, i.e., Nagoya, Japan. It all started with Kanekichi Yasui, who founded the company Yasui Sewing and Co in 1908. Yasui Sewing and Co provided repair services and parts for sewing machines, and their main objective was to be the best sewing machine manufacturer in the world. After 18 years in the business, Kanekichi Yasui died, and his son, Masayoshi, took over the company and renamed it to Yasui Brother’s Sewing Machine Co.

In 1932, Brother mass-produced Model 15 Type 70 domestic sewing machines, and the machines quickly became popular as they were more durable than the average German machines at the time. After five years of producing sewing machines and shuttle hooks, Yasui Brother’s Sewing Machine Co was renamed to Nippon Sewing Machine Manufacturing Co. Under the new name, it started manufacturing industry-scale sewing machines in Japan’s neighboring countries, Broadening its area of expertise. Brother quickly gained international level recognition and mass exported their 200 HA-1 domestic straight stitching sewing machines to Shanghai, China. In 1941, Nippon Sewing Machine Manufacturing Co. created their first subsidiary sales brand known as Brother Sales, Ltd.

Between 1954–1964, Nippon Sewing Machine Manufacturing Co. started diversifying its product line and began manufacturing electrical appliances, knitting machines, and printers. In 1954, Brother International Corporation was established, and it served as a bridge between Brother and the rest of the world. After gaining exponential success in the sewing machine industry, Brother entered into the printer market and renamed Nippon Sewing Machine Manufacturing Co. to Brother Industries, Ltd.

Between 1971–1989, the world was entering into the computer world, and so does Brother. In 1971, Brother manufactured the world’s first high-speed dot-matrix printer, and it was the first printer that used the dot-matrix technology in the world, paving the path for the printer technology that we see today. With the printer, Brother gained international exposure, and the company was recognized as the pioneer in printer technology at that time.

How did Brother influence the printer and typewriter market?

In the process of transitioning from producing only sewing machines to manufacturing dozens of electrical appliances, Brother supported many events throughout Japan and quickly seized the typewriter and printer market. In the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, Brother supported the event by providing 300 typewriters for foreign journalists. The event gave Brother an exposure that no one ever envisioned. Seven years after the Tokyo Olympic Games, Brother mass-produced typewriters that could write in more than 20 languages and exported them to 110 countries. From 1980 to 1995, Brother produced many new technologies and devices that changed the way humans perform their day-to-day tasks. But the most significant change came when Brother introduced their flagship A3 Colour Multi-Function Centre in 2008 that could do everything from scanning, color printing, fax, and Ethernet networks to print remotely.

How are Brother printers better than average printers?

Brother printers carry the same blood and sweat as their predecessor appliances. They are relatively cheaper than average printers, and the best part about these printers is how easy they are to operate. Also, Brother printers are made for the long run as they provide better longevity, and their toner replacements are cheaper than their competitors like HP, Epson, and Canon. Another thing that makes Brother printers the better option is the ability to print over 7,000 pages, which reduces the cost of frequent replacement of cartridges. Also, by looking at the long-term usage and the amount you pay for your printer, Brother printers tick all the right dots. Additionally, Brother makes almost every type of printer, and most of them can be used for industry-level projects that require full-day, full-night operation

Final thoughts

Brother is an inspiration for people who want to succeed in their life. It shows how being consistent in business can change the world. Kanekichi Yasui could have never thought that the company he built for sewing machines would transform the lives of 38,624 employees and millions of people who trust Brother’s products and services. Today, the company stands as one of the best multi-domain organizations that serve people from all around the world. Brother has set a benchmark for organizations who want to grow in the manufacturing field. In 2021, the company still abides by its motto to serve people with the slogan “At your side.”
